Over 50: The Age of Adventure!

50 is the new 30!

Research shows that 57% of over 50s feel more adventurous now than they did in their 30s. A growing number of people in their 50s have an appetite for adventure in their holidays with 25% choosing adventure holidays as their favourite type of break (Travel Weekly). It’s the perfect time to try new experiences, with health and disposable income available and an empty nest at home.

‘Adventure holidays offer a wonderful opportunity to try new experiences, cultures and locations and perhaps a new activity too,’ says Tim Young of Tyco Travel. ‘And if you feel that you deserve a little luxury at 50, why not combine comfort as well as a challenge? The possibilities are endless … and hugely exciting!’

Here are our top trips for anyone over 50 who wants an adventure. If you’re thinking of something a little different for your next break, we hope that our ideas inspire you. If there’s something that appeals, let us know. Between our own travels and our global network of partners, we’ll offer first-hand advice about adventure holidays and locations.

We love to talk about activities and travel … the perfect combination!

Best adventure holidays for the over 50s

1. Put on your hiking boots!

Explore new cultures and countries by foot! Trekking to ancient ruins or through historical trails can be both physically and mentally rewarding. Hiking in the Canadian Rockies offers spectacular scenery (think of mountains, glaciers, lakes). We also recommend Peru’s Inca trail or the Camino de Santiago in Spain (our customers love this destination) for their combination of culture and activity.

2. Take a walk on the wild side!
African safaris are a wonderful way to see the big game in their natural environment. Expert guides help you spot the majestic wildlife, from lions and elephants to leopards, buffalo and rhinoceros. Even better – safaris can include as much or as little luxury as you enjoy.

Make this experience your own!

3. On your bike!
It’s true – the Tyco team is biased towards cycling holidays as this is our founder’s favourite type of active holiday!

The world is your oyster – literally! Our top cycling adventures include:

  • immersing yourself in a cultural cycling experience in Vietnam,
  • experiencing the surreal desert landscapes of Jordan and Wadi Rum, and
  • savouring the flavour of a gastronomic cycling tour (including vineyards) in Italy’s Piedmont region.

Almost everywhere has a fabulous cycling adventure waiting to be explored … we’ve experienced lots of them! We’ll tailor your break to your wish list, fitness and budget.

4. Conquer the waves!
Sailing is hugely popular amongst the over 50s. It offers a tremendous sense of independence and adventure. We love the versatility it offers – from how much you’d like to be involved to the wonderful destinations you visit. Maybe you could hire your own yacht, or tour the Greek islands as part of the ship’s crew? How about taking a cruise to more remote regions, such as the Arctic – would you like to spot polar bears or orca whales?Polar bear

Go for it!

Or, for a truly traditional sailing adventure, try a unique tall ships experience. Combine the thrill of sailing on a historic vessel with the opportunity to explore amazing destinations (including the Amalfi coast, Artic fjords and the Greek islands). Tall ships’ rigging works with the wind, harnessing nature to provide an immersive, traditional sailing experience. We recommend this option if you truly want to roll up your sleeves and get involved!

5. Saddle up!
Discover new terrain on horseback, such as Jordan for riding Arab horses with desert scenery (think Lawrence of Arabia) or coastal rides in Morocco or South Africa. We love the pace of horse riding holidays and the opportunity to connect with nature … and stay offline!

6. Explore under the seas!
Diving holidays are hugely popular, offering a winning combination of activity, adventure and sunshine. Explore shipwrecks in Egypt, swim with sea life (fish, sharks, turtles) in Australia or the Caribbean and admire the beauty of coral reefs. Consider taking the necessary diving training before your break. This makes the most of your holiday time for exploring the ocean.

7. A gastronomic getaway!

Indulge your senses during a culinary adventure exploring different cultures and flavours. Enjoy new dining experiences showcasing the best local ingredients. Many gastronomic holidays offer workshops and tastings. You could learn a new signature dish during your culinary break! A range of delicious breaks are available, including Mediterranean destinations and – if your tastebuds are more adventurous – Morocco, Thailand and even Japan.

We hope we’ve inspired you! If you’re ready for an adventure holiday, planning is part of the fun!
